IELTS Task 2 Sample Answer 15 - The percentage of overweight children in western society has increased by almost 20% in the last ten years. Discuss the causes and effects of this disturbing trend

The number of children who are obese in the western countries has shown a remarkable increase over the last decade. This worrying trend can be related to the unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyle in children and the effects can be alarmingly harming if not addressed adequately.

The most contributing cause resulting in the increase of weight among children is their over eating habits. Consuming food more than what is required for the body results in the accumulation of fats. Most of the kids of the western world are addicted to fast foods which are high in fats and calories. Such practices not only steal the healthy eating habits among children but also increase their average weight causing child obesity.

Minimal physical activity can contribute to another significant cause of overweight among children. Advancement in technology has influenced the lifestyle of children negatively. They are more interested to play with technology rather than outdoor activities. Thus they burn less energy considering their food intake. The unused energy is stored as fat in their body leading to increased weight in children.

The effects of this trend can be irreversible if not corrected. Obesity can affect the development of a child mentally and physically. Obese children are generally not much interested in any kind of sports activities which can reduce their fitness level. This can lead to some lifestyle diseases like juvenile diabetes. Such children will also lose their concentration in studies which can be a risk for their future.

In conclusion, the increase in the percentage of obese children has become a concern of the western world. However, this trend can be minimised by strict monitoring of children by the parents and the teachers, so that they maintain healthy food habits and lifestyle for a better future.
